Global Women Partners in Philanthropy
2011 Lessons Learned

Our initial fact-finding mission to China took place from July 8 through July 24, 2011.   We visited four cities: Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing and Hong Kong.  Over the course of 2+ weeks, we conducted 25 meetings with 60 government officials, leading academicians, foundation executives, civic leaders and established philanthropists.  We learned that while philanthropy in China is growing, the infrastructure to support philanthropic organizations and donors is limited.  In particular, there has been little work in the area of building a model of local philanthropy that is designed for China’s unique characteristics. Another challenge is the fact that international foundations and aid agencies are reducing support to China as China's wealth increases.  But there still are needs that must be met.  It is precisely this niche where a proven model of effective local/indigenous philanthropy is needed.   This is the core focus of our program.
