Engineers Without Borders
Purpose: Engineers without Borders is dedicated to partnering with disadvantaged communities worldwide in order to improve their quality of life through the implementation of environmentally sustainable, equitable and economical engineering projects. Projects must benefit the overall community.
Location: Tuquiza, Bolivia.
Summary of Project: EWB-UW hopes to implement a roof and stove project, following the successful completion of a similar project in a neighboring village in 2008. The building of better engineered stoves would help combat respiratory problems caused by inhalation of smoke fumes. In addition, EWB-UW hopes to replace the thatched roofs of many houses (which provide a habitat for the Chagas bug, a disease carrier) with corrugated metal roofs. EWB-UW hopes to sustain their work in this part of Bolivia for many years to come.
Support from Seattle International Foundation: The Seattle International Foundation has provided Engineers without Border- UW Chapter with a grant in the amount of $10,000 in support of their mission.
