SIF awards $95,000 to support initiatives in Honduras
focused on women’s empowerment and opportunities for youth
Seattle –The Seattle International Foundation (SIF) is pleased to announce $95,000 in grants to support women’s leadership programs and educational scholarships for youth in Honduras. The projects funded focus on strengthening individuals’ advocacy and leadership capacities; providing educational opportunities for youth; and increasing local government’s investment in rural communities.
SIF awarded a grant of $45,000 to Organismo Cristiano de Desarrollo Integral de Honduras (OCDIH) to support OCDIH’s work around the socio-economic and political empowerment of women leaders in Western Honduras. OCDIH will strengthen the advocacy and leadership capacities of community leaders, focusing on 20 women leaders, so they can more effectively participate in decision-making spaces regarding issues related to agriculture, the environment and economic status of women. OCDIH will work with these communities to create concrete recommendations to propose to the local government to increase local government’s investment in rural communities and small-scale agriculture, with a focus on gender equality.
$25,000 was awarded to Organization for Youth Empowerment (OYE) to support OYE’s work around promoting education, youth leadership and youth community action in El Progreso, Honduras. SIF funds will support educational scholarships for youth leaders, as well as “community action programs” which scholarship recipients lead and coordinate including a radio program, a youth-led magazine reaching 1,000 families, and a sports program serving 1,500 youth.
SIF awarded $25,000 to Organización Fraternal Negra Hondurena (OFRANEH) to train 500 indigenous, Garifuna women across ten communities in northern Honduras, with a focus on personal leadership and increasing access to government resources on climate change and disaster preparedness, critical issues for these communities. This grant will also support advocacy activities and the creation of a video documentary, as well the establishment of seedling nurseries to reforest vulnerable areas.
